Illawarra Model Aero Club - IMAC

IMAC: Illawarra Model Aero Club...

Club Rules

The governing body for aero-modelling in Australia is the MAAA (Model Aeronautical Association of Australia Inc.) which is recognised by the international body for sport aviation, the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI). Each state has its own group, for NSW it is MAS NSW (Model Aero Sports, NSW). There are also numerous special interest associations serving the diverse range of aero-modelling interests. It is important to realize that most of the rules and obligations of the Club arise from rules prescribed by the various governing bodies.  In particular the flying of free flight and radio controlled model aircraft is subject to the requirements of Civil Aviation Safety Regulations Part 101. This order is a statutory obligation on all Club Members and among other things requires:

  • No flying within three nautical miles of an aerodrome without CASA ( Civil Aviation Safety Authority) approval
  • No flying above 400 feet in controlled airspace or in populated areas. Flight above 400 ft is allowed elsewhere providing the model is kept in sight and the approach of general aviation aircraft can be observed and avoided.
  • No flying within 30 metres of anyone not involved in the operation of the models.

The MAAA prescribes rules, policy guidelines and recommendations necessary to comply with the CASA regulations, the requirements of the insurer and the administration of the sport. The MAAA negotiates and secures the insurance cover for modellers who are members of affiliated clubs. The Club’s rules cover the key parameters of these regulations, rules and guidelines. The Club must operate within the requirements of the regulations, and the Governing bogies’ rules, guidelines and recommendations.

Model aircraft, no matter how large or small have the potential to cause serious injury or death to their operator, other club members, or the general public. Most of the Club Rules are designed to recognise and minimize this risk. Violation of the Club’s safety rules may not only jeopardize your insurance cover but it could also result in termination of your membership of the Club. The rules are common sense in many cases and they are for the benefit of all. If you accidentally break one of these rules you may be advised of this by a Club or Committee member. Please remember they are trying to keep the club safe for you and all members and accept their advice in good spirit.
